2009-2010 School Arts Performance Series

Kershaw County school children, teachers and parents experience live performances by professional musicians, dancers and actors. Each performance is woven into the school curriculum, enriching the learning process through the arts!

Carolina Downhome Blues Festival

A special educational concert featuring internationally-acclaimed blues artists participating in the 13th annual Carolina Downhome Blues Festival! Wanda Johnson and the Shrimp City Slim Blues Revue will present an informal concert that will enhance students’ appreciation of the soulful sounds of the South's indigenous music, a major influence on rock and roll. Will reinforce music standards; social studies standards (Pop Culture.) 45 minutes

Claire Byrant & Friends: the “TROUT” quintet

Cellist and Camden native, Claire Bryant, is joined by four of New York City’s outstanding young artists, to present an exhilarating and interactive program centered around Schubert’s “Trout” Quintet! These artists include alumni from the premiere community-based fellowship The Academy: A Program of Carnegie Hall, the Juilliard School, and the Weill Music Institute. Kershaw County students of all ages are guaranteed a rocking good time, as we explore some of chamber music’s most innovative and exciting offerings! 50 minutes

AESOP 2: Return of the Fable
Aesop’s fables are back!!

Join Porkchop Productions and the students of Wateree Elementary as we take a second look into the fun, fanciful and educational world of fables. Will the Milkmaid drop her pail? Will the dog lose his bone forever? Find out in this original, music filled adaptation that brings all your favorite characters to life! Even though our version may be a little bit “fractured,” the moral always comes through in the end. 50 minutes

Synergy Brass Quintet - Music of America

This high-energy classical ensemble is known the world over for its “blazing precision and amazing technique” combined with “a rock star approach to performing.” This program discusses the history of America and the role of music in shaping our culture and heritage. Music of America includes early American folk songs, classical works by American composers, jazz, Broadway, and rock; and is jam-packed with patriotic music and American motifs. 45 minutes

GRAND’ DADDY JUNEBUG

Mitch Capel, a.k.a “Gran’ daddy Junebug,” is a story teller has been delighting audiences with his compelling style since 1985. He is considered “the national interpreter” of the laureate Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872-1906.)  Gran’ daddy Junebug teaches personal responsibility and respect for self and others through the African oral tradition of “call and response.” highly energetic program utilizes a tremendous amount of audience participation as he shares his wisdom with students. Celebrate Black History Month with Mitch Capel. Your students will learn lessons while having a time! 1 hour

Wizard Of Oz Youth Theatre Production
The classic story comes to life with a cast of young actors from schools throughout Kershaw County. Students in grades 2-12 can audition for a role late January 2010.
