Youth Arts Month

The School Arts Residency Program (serving Kershaw County students for over twenty years) provides hands-on, class room arts experiences with practicing artists. Past residencies have included storytelling, mime and movement, ceramics, puppetry, music, poetry, and drama.

The School Arts Performance Series includes performance and lectures/demonstrations for large audiences. The chamber music, professional theatre and dance companies, West African drumming ensembles, and hundreds of artists and performers have treated students, parents, and teachers to live entertainment. Teacher and artist coordination is emphasized so that curricular objectives can be fostered by performances.

Dr. Susan Wyatt, director of the Fine Arts Center's choral program, continues to nurture the country wide 4th & 5th grade choir for the Kershaw County Schools. Initially funded through Target 2000 grants, the program is now being supported by the school district's commitment to depth in arts curriculum offerings.

Arts Arising is an intense, arts focused program during the month of June. The Arts Arising Program allows school district gifted and talented students to develop toward their full potential in a supportive environment that challenges them to move beyond the expected.

Arts Scholars is a pre-professional arts program for students contemplating college arts degrees and/or careers in the arts. The Arts Scholars program provides gifted and talented students in grades 7, 8, 9 & 10 the opportunity to work for a week during the summer with gifted artists and arts educators.

Kershaw County Schools District 4th & 5th Grade Chorus is a program where Dr. Susan Wyatt travels to each Kershaw County elementary school and works each week with vocally talented 4 & 5 grade students. All these students are brought together for rehearsals and performances at the FAC throughout the school year.

Youth Arts Month Gala Performance & Exhibit

A celebration of the county's young artists includes a juried gallery exhibit with 100's of pieces of art from kindergarten through high school students. Twelve of the best works are selected to become a touring exhibit for the upcoming year. In addition, there are two different evening performances featuring children on stage in dance, music and drama activities.
