Columbia City Ballet presents a performance of Sleeping Beauty, the classic fairy tale ballet set to the music of Tchaikovsky. Local children will have the opportunity to audition to be a part of this production and dance with some of the most talented dancers in the country.
Columbia City Ballet brings this stunning production to the FAC for two nights. With many professional dancers from all over the world and more than 30 local youth, this will be one of the largest productions to perform in the Wood Auditorium.
● About the
production
The fairy tale The
Sleeping Beauty presents a classic tale of good -- represented by the Lilac
Fairy -- triumphing over evil -- embodied in the wicked fairy Carabosse. The
wicked fairy is left off the guest list for the infant Princess Aurora's
christening, and unbeknownst to the royal family, the fairy Carabosse plots to
take her revenge. She interrupts the ceremony to bestow a gift on the baby
princess: Aurora shall grow up to be beautiful, but on her 16th birthday she
shall prick her finger on a spindle and die. Fortunately, the Lilac Fairy had
not given her gift yet, and decrees that the Princess shall not die but will
fall asleep for 100 years. The spell is only to be broken with the kiss
of true love from a handsome prince.
The Sleeping Beauty captures the grace and technical strength of all the dancers who have the chance to perform it. In Columbia City Ballet's production, ballerina Regina Willoughby will dance the title role of Aurora with soloist Journy Wilkes-Davis as Prince Charming. Principal dancers Mark Krieger and Kathryn Smoak will dance the technically demanding Blue Bird Pas De Deux. The Lilac Fairy will be portrayed by soloist Claire Kallimanis, while her evil counterpart Carabosse will be brought to life by Alexis Doktor and Cooper Rust.
